There are about a dozen different "38s" other than the .38 Special. In the .38 Special caliber, there are round nosed lead, jacketed soft point, semi-wadcutter, wadcutter, jacketed hollow point, full metal jacketed, tracer, shot loads, metal piercing and multi-ball buckshot loads.

Besides the .38 Special, there is .38 S&W, 38 Short Colt, .38 Enfield, .38 Long, .38 Remington, .38 Corto, .38 Super, .38 Auto, .38 AMU- and probably several others in my references. You can make a large cartridge collection just from the varieties of 38s.

Can you shoot .38 caliber ammo in a 380 caliber handgun?

No. Ammo designated as .38 or .38 special is different than ammo designated as .380. .380 is designed for semi-auto handguns and .38 ammo is for revolvers.More to the point, the .38 Special has a longer case, and a larger diameter projectile. The .38 special bullet measures .357" diameter, the .380 measures .355" diameter. The .38 special is a 'rimmed' cartridge, and the .380 is 'rimless'. Luckily, .38 Special ammo will not fit in a .380 magazine, otherwise the results could be disastrous, possibly turning your .380 handgun into a hand grenade.

Is there only one type ammo for a smith and Wesson 38 caliber revolver?

Is 9mm ammo interchangeable with 38 cal?

No, they are two different cartridges. 9mm is a semi-automatic cartridge and .38 caliber is a revolver cartridge. As a general rule, no ammo is "interchangeable" with other ammo. Some guns will fire more than one specific cartridge, such a the .357 magum, but each type of ammo is different than each other type.

Will 38 caliber SW ammo shoot in a 38 special revolver?

No. The .38 S&W is a different cartridge from the .38 Special. Basically, the .38 S&W is shorter, fatter, and has less energy. It will not chamber in a gun meant for .38 Special.
