There are more than 80 different types of dementia. The most common are Alzheimer's, Vascular Dementia and Frontal Temporal Dementia. Alzheimer's and Vascular Dementia are very similar in terms of the effects on the person who has them (at least until Alzheimer's progresses into later stages). FTD is a very different type.

There are many forms of dementia, a category of diseases characterized by memory loss, cognitive impairment, and changes in personality or behavior. Types of dementia include cortical dementia, subcortical dementia, and multi-infarct dementia. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are the most commonly known forms of dementia.

There are three stages if dementia recognized by doctors. The symptoms can very person to person, but in the first stage there are small symptoms that can easily be missed. The first stage consists of small lapses in memory that may be over looked, loose some of the spark that makes them who they are. Many people in the first stages of dementia will have small personality changes. The best way to get information on dementia is through a medical doctor.
