It depends on how malnourished you are. If you are going to prenatal visits and taking vitamins the effects will probably be a smaller baby and your teeth, hair and bones will probably be brittle. The baby takes all you have. As long as you are not anorexic it will get what it needs from you, which will leave you unhealthier. Since vitamins will be its main source of nutrition it just won't have the body fat it needs. But on the other hand severe malnourishment has been known to cause birth defects.

The mother can become weak and so can the developing fetus is there is not enough nutrients. This can also cause some birth defects, low birth weight, or complications in the baby. Poor nutrition can cause a person to get sick normally, and being pregnant it only increases that risk and also gives risk towards the baby becomming sick, too.

An unborn child (fetus) gets all of its nutrients from the mother. Therefore, if the mother is malnorished then the baby will be too. This can have many negative long term effects on the child, even if it is fed plenty of food once it has been born.

Some of the long term effects are:

- A weak immune system

- Slower growth and being born undersized

- Lower levels of stamina and energy

- Greater risks for contracting illnesses

- The posibility of having lower IQ and cognitive impairment

- Birth defects and mental disorders

The more malnorished the mother is the worse the effects will be.

If the mother is starving then the baby may not develop sufficiently to survive and will die in childbirth.
