70% of the country lives in rural low-land areas in which agricultural is the only means of a livelihood. Due to low productivity and land-degradation, unemployment and low wages are on the rise.

Financial limitations and accessibility deter those impoverished from getting out of poverty, therefore a cycle occurs, as well as a widening of socioeconomic status and wealth distribution.

Disease, and the related health care costs, are major contributors. HIV/AIDS and malaria are the main social and economic diseases affecting Kenya. As with any country affected by these diseases, a direct correlation can be made between GDP (at the national level and per capita) and infection rates. Primarily due to loss of work days and government transfer payments.

Social/Ethnic/Political divisions account for low levels of progress and forward-thinking. Present power and maintaining that power has become the norm within the political system, instead of focus on the future.

On a positive note: many of the unemployed from the agriculture sector are now becoming artisans and skilled craftsmen. One of the fastest growing sectors in Kenya in the exportation of Kenyan art and crafts. Made possible by the Advancement of African Countries (reduced tariffs) programs established by many countries.

These are just a few - there are many, many more.
