It would be extremely hard to find the smallest cities in the US. Normally, you cannot find a list of cities under 100,000 at a nation-wide level. To actually find the answer, you would have to look through each states' list of incorporated cities and find the five smallest in the nation.
As of the 2009 census data:
1. New York, New York - 8,391,881
2. Los Angeles, California - 3,831,868
3. Chicago, Illinois - 2,851,268
4. Houston, Texas - 2,257,926
5. Phoenix, Arizona - 1,593,659
The five least populated towns/cities in the US are:
Arizona - Tortilla Flat population 6 people
Nebraska - Monowi population 1 people
Minnesota - Tenney population 7 people
South Dakota - Hillsview population 3 people
Oregon- Greenhorn population: 0
Major cities of the US are classified as being over 100,000. The ten smallest major cities in the US are:
It won't be easy to find the ten least populated cities in the US. The definition of a city is a largely populated urban area. It has more population than a town, village, etc. It is difficult to count what is a city and what isn't, however. Some states don't label incorporated places, but allow them to do so themselves (such as in California), where there could be cities with a very small population. Another example is that some appropriately named cities are smaller than towns in other states. So when dealing with the term city, we usually only included incorporated places with a population greater than 100,000, in which there are 285 in the US.
The 10 smallest cities in the US are:
