The heaviest and the hardest wood in the world is Snakewood (Piratinera guianensis).

There are also many other candidats to be the hardest wood: ironwood, huacapu and some types of eucalypts.

You can find a list of the hardest and the softest woods at the link in the Related Links. You will find a list that has been compiled according to the JANKA HARDNESS TEST.

Wood hardness is rated on the Janka scale, which measures how many pounds of force it takes to drive a 0.444" steel ball halfway into a piece of something. Lignum vitae, at 4500 Janka, is the hardest wood there is. The next hardest wood is nearly 1000 pounds softer.

See Quebracho (schinopsis lorentzii) from Argentine with 4700 Janka !!!!

Hardwood is the common way that deciduous trees are classified. The opposite is true for softwood. It is the classification for coniferous trees. the hard or soft distinction has nothing at all to do with how hard or soft the wood actually is.

If the tree has leaves that fall in autumn, it is a hardwood and it it has needles, it is a softwood.
