Lower rates (on average) of obesity, Heart disease, high cholesterol, and cancer. This is probably because diets that are higher in saturated fat increase the risk for any or all of these conditions, and most saturated fat comes from animal products. Most vegetarian protein sources are either low in fat overall (such as beans/legumes), or are low in saturated fat while being higher in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats (such as nuts and seeds). Saturated fats increase LDL (bad) cholesterol, leading to increased risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, etc.

Of course, a vegetarian can get any of these diseases, if he/she consumes excess dairy products made from whole milk, or if he/she has other risk factors, such as smoking, drinking, sedative life style, or family history of health problems.

Health Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet- It is nourishing and provides you with vitamins and energy;

- It is a cleansing diet;

- It makes your body fit;

Studies show that vegetarians have longer life spans, lower incidence rates of heart disease and cancer, as well as Diabetes. By not eating animal meat, vegetarians avoid the high concentrations of LDL cholesterol (the bad kind), as well as saturated fats. Meat is also difficult for the body to digest, especially when it is consumed in excess, which many people in the West do. The average American consumes over 200 pounds of meat a year - far too much to support a healthy body, let alone for the our planet to support.

There is such a thing as an unhealthy vegetarian, though. Subsisting off of beer and potato chips will make anyone fat, but would still constitute as a vegetarian diet. Eating lots of legumes (beans), whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and moderate amounts of dairy and eggs will yield an incredibly healthy diet, generally resulting in increased energy and decreased risk of disease.

Primarily, a sense of moral superiority. As an extreme form of vegetarianism, being a vegan places excessive limits on your diet and can lead to malnutrition. However, it does have all the usual benefits of vegetarianism; you will be kind to animals by not eating them, you will be environmentally benign by eating lower on the food chain, you will avoid the risk presented by the various additives and prions which may be found in meat, and your diet will be lower in cholesterol. You will almost certainly lose weight. But you might lose too much weight.

While a healthy vegan diet can be hard to maintain, plant protein and vegetables are considered to be extremely healthy. However, make sure to still get enough protein and calcium, or it could lead to more harm than good.

It varies as vegetarian diets can be unhealthy as well (e.g. cheese Pizza and potato chips for every meal) but in general vegetarians have lower body fat, cholesterol, and lower blood pressure than omnivorous diets.

Vegetarian diets which are naturally low in saturated fat, are high in fiber help prevent cancer. Breast cancer rates are dramatically lower in nations such as China that follow plant based diets. Different studies include thousands of people that have shown regular meat consumption increase colon cancer risk by about 300%. Vegetarian diets encourage the bodies protection to ovarian cancer, which is cancer to the ovaries. The failure to consume vegetables regularly quadruples the risk of prostate enlargement. Vegetarians avoid the animal fat linked to cancer and get phytochemicals that help prevent cancer. Blood analysis of vegetarians reveal a higher level of specialized white blood cells that attack cancer cells. Vegetarian diets also help to prevent heart disease. Animal products are the main source of saturated fat and the only source of cholesterol. Vegetarians avoid things like this. Studies have also shown that combined prudent drug intervention and vegetarian diets could actually reverse hardening of the arteries. An old study shows that nutritionists noted that people who ate no meat had a lower blood pressure. They also noticed within two weeks being a vegetarian could significantly reduce a persons blood pressure. Cutting out meat, dairy products, and added fats reduce the bloods viscosity and brings down the blood pressure. Diabetes can be better controlled and sometimes eliminated through a low fat vegetarian diet along with regular exercise. Vegetarian diets have also been shown to reduce chances of forming kidney stones. Diets that are high protein tend to cause the body to destroy the three main substances of urinary stones. Meaty diets, compared to vegetarian diets, have been shown to nearly double the risk of gallstones in women. In nations with mainly vegetable diets, osteoporosis is less common. People that practiced full vegan/vegetarian diets for a full year have marked a decrease in the need for medications for Asthma attacks. Twenty two of the twenty four subjects improved by the end of the year. Vegetarian diets protect the body in many ways. They also protect animals. Being a vegetarian or vegan is definitely a great option!

Compared with the standard Western diet, a vegan diet can offer many health benefits and fewer risks. If you consume a wide variety of unprocessed fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, and mushrooms, and you ensure that you have a source of vitamin B12, such as fortified foods or a supplement, you should have a long, healthy life. Sunshine, water, and exercise are also important.
