A cake decorator is something of an artist. It requires a steady hand, ability to mix colors. Knowledge of tips to use, air brushes, and ability to create the flowers, roses, leafs and such with the piping bag. What you do not hear or see in most job requirements is ability to stand and work for a shift, as decorators stations do not have chairs.
Mix the cake batter, prep the pans, insure oven is at correct temp. pour batter into the pans and place into the oven. Bake product until it is done, then allow it to cool and remove from pan. Cake is then placed into a cooler until the cake decorator needs it.
Depending where you go (I work in a grocery store bakery) you could be doing everything from:
Filling a dessert case with:
Pies
Cheese cakes
Cake slices
Brownies
Ice cream cakes
Filling a decadent dessert case with:
Fancy/time consuming cakes
Miniature and large items (eclairs, cream puffs, cannolis, Napoleons, cream horns...)
Taking orders
Decorated birthday cakes
Wedding cakes
Organizing/cleaning work place (coolers, freezers, supplies)

The low pay compared to the skill required.
To express their creativity, and get paid while doing it!

sevenIt depends on the type of cake, and how good the decorator is. For cake with simple designs and icings, they should be able to complete anywhere from 3 or 4 to a dozen (for small sizes) cakes in an hour. For more elaborate designs or impornant, larger cakes (graduations, baby showers, weddings, ect.), it should take them a few hours just to complete that one cake.
decorator.

Cake and cupcakes because it depends if you want more or less
you would need about 4 boxes of cake mix. it only depends on how many layers you are making. that is a basic of 2 layers each.

Both are true, depending on the context. "Some cake" would apply to a slice, "a cake" would be appropriate to describe the whole dessert.
