I think the lesson here is that something small can matter a lot. This applies to faith... even if we only start out with the desire to believe, and we let that desire work a change in us, the results can be amazing... in the way we can change and grow and become better. The lesson applies to the world... even one person, no matter how small, can make a huge difference, little by little, if he or she works at it. And it applies to learning. We learn little by little the things that we are taught, but eventually those things add up to great knowledge and great wisdom, if we nurture them and allow them to get that far.

∙ 12y agoThe lesson being taught by Jesus in this parable is of the small beginnings and growth of Christ's kingdom (Matt. 13:31-32; Mark 4:31-32; Luke 13:19). The description of the Mustard Seed as "the smallest seeds on earth" by Jesus has caused a stumbling block for some people. Professor Bart Erhman comes immediately to mind. In his book Misquoting Jesus, he says "Maybe , when Jesus says later in Mark 4 that the mustard seed is the smallest seeds on earth, maybe I don't need to come up with a fancy explanation for how the mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds when I know full well it isn't. And maybe the 'mistakes' apply to bigger issues." I believe he misses the point of the parable here. The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed in the sense that it begins small and becomes large. Jesus' parable was not intended to provide a lesson on plant development and growth. Nor did Jesus mistakenly think that the mustard seed was smaller than the orchard seed. Instead He was using the smallest of seeds familiar to Palestinian farmers to illustrate that, while the kingdom of God began in obscurity, in the end it would fill the earth and endure forever.

∙ 12y agoAccording to my view and the view of the NIV Commentators of the 2008 Update, the message is this: the Kingdom will seem to have a small beginning, but will reach throughout the whole world. Just like how the mustard seed is small, but can grow up to about ten feet under good conditions.
