If you'd asked "Longest", "Widest" or "Most volume" it would be a short answer - but - - 'Greatest' is such a nebulous term when describing a river. -The Nile is by far the longest, yet the Amazon, although shorter brings far more water to the ocean. The Mississipi/Missouri is an amazing system, wide, slow moving and steeped in American history -literally a story at every bend. But is it any greater than the mighty Volga that winds it's way across Europe, carrying people and millions of tons of cargo on ships and barges right across the continent.
-As a child I once cruised the slow, wide, Congo through jungles and plains, on an ancient flat bottom steamer carrying whole families from a variety of cultures, refugees seeking shelter, farmers bring their goods to markets far down the river and hunters bringing back their catch. The decks teemed with running kids, chickens, and monkeys and many other small animals in cages and many cooking fires. -Over the side in the slow brown current we could see the eyes of the ever hopeful crocodiles watching us. Now, that was a great river!
