For Jefferson nickels, the most valuable are the 1938-S, 1939-D, and 1950-D. For Buffalo nickels, key dates include 1913-D and S, both type 1 and 2, 1914-D, 1915-S, 1918/17-D, 1921-S, and 1937-D 3-leg. With Liberty nickels, valuable dates are 1885 and 1886. Then for Shield nickels, the rare dates are 1871, 1879, 1880, and 1881.

The coin is actually called a buffalo nickel or an Indian head nickel, but not "buffalo head". After all, it shows the entire buffalo, not just its head :)

The 3 most valuable Indian head (a/k/a buffalo) nickels are all error coins:

> 1916 with a re-cut date, so that a second "shadow" date appears underneath the first. As of 01/2015 prices range from $3750 in G4 (extremely worn) all the way up to $455,000 for a coin in MS66 condition, i.e. almost perfect shape.

> 1918-D with a re-cut 1917 underneath. Prices are $1000 in G4 up to $262,000 in MS65

> 1937-D with one leg of the buffalo missing due to overpolishing of a reverse die. The range here is $513 to $119,000 in MS67.

Hands down it has to be the famous 1913 Liberty Head nickel. Only 5 were made and they were never officially authorized by the Mint. A recent sale of one of the best specimens was in the neighborhood of $7 million.

The single most valuable buffalo nickel is the 1937-D 3-legged variety, followed by the 1918/17-D double die, and then the 1913-S type 2.

Note that the coin is called an Indian Head or Buffalo nickel, but not "buffalo head" - it shows the entire buffalo!
