The official languages of Papua New Guinea are Tok Pisin, English, and Hiri Motu. In addition, there are over 820 indigenous languages.

English is the language spoken within the government and the education system, but is used by only around 1-2% of the people. Tok Pisin, also known as New Guinea Pidgin or Melanesian Pidgin, is a creole langauage and the most widely used. Hiri Motu is spoken by less than 2% of the population, and is most common in the southern region.

The indigenous languages are grouped into Austronesian languages and non-Austronesian (or Papuan languages).
