Jeff Hunter's career decisions were made by his wife who turned down his chance at the second pilot, and he was replaced by the Canadian actor William Shatner. Majel Barett, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was bumped as the unemotional "Number One" by Spock, but she returned as Nurse Chapel who was in love with Spock, and as the voice of the Enterprise computer. As Yeoman Rand, actress Grace Lee Whitney dropped out after eleven episodes under the official story that she was pregnant. Really, she had become an alcoholic nymphomaniac, and it took many years to clean herself up. Walter Koenig did not join the Star Trek cast until the second season because Roddenberry wanted a long-haired Davey Jones type to increase younger viewership. It was originally intended that he be British, but Russia complained that they were not represented in the multi-national Star Trek crew, so Koenig's character became Ensign Chekov. George Takei missed a few episodes of the first season while filming the movie The Green Berets with John Wayne. Kirk's tombstone in the second pilot reads James R. Kirk. DeForest Kelley (McCoy) died June 11, 1999; James Doohan (Scotty) died July 20, 2005; Majel Barrett - Roddenbarry (Chapel) died December 18, 2008; and Leonard Nimoy (Spock) died February 27, 2015.
