To be accepted as a Hindu, one has to absolutely believe in Vedas to understand the nature of unknown (Self, Absolute, Brahman). Only vedas and nothing else can be used to understand the nature of unknown.That is one has to reason only within the framework provided by the Vedas. If a conclusion you draw is not compatible with what the vedas imply or mean then you have to believe that your line of reasoning is wrong. So, in short Vedas have to be accepted as the final authority as a means of knowledge to understand the Absolute. The thing to understand clearly here is that for Hindus the domain of vedas is strictly Metaphysics. For things that are perceptible no need to use vedas because now one can understand the nature of things by observation and inference. So, legally, constituitionally and socially for one to be accepted as a Hindu, one should believe in the authority of Vedas as a means of knowledge to understand the Absolute. Caste, creed, sect, birth are not a hinderence.
