Infection, contracting blood-borne diseases, and cartilage collapsing. If you go to a reputable shop, there's a seriously low chance of contracting a blood-borne disease. Same goes for infection but infection also depends on how you care for the piercing. Cartilage collapses when you get an infection or keloid .

there really aren't any "consequences" if you will. But make sure that you go to a place you can trust, not claires. claires uses a gun, as opposed to a needle.

some place that have certified piercing specialists.

also, make sure to buy the sanitary cleaning spray and clean it daily to prevent infection.

if you do not a bulge can form that won't ever go away.

Infections, side effects and healing issues are all points you need to discuss with your professional body piercer BEFORE you get the piercing done. You also need to discuss aftercare for the piercing, this should be followed up with written aftercare instructions for your piercing. No professional body piercer will force you to purchase aftercare products, this is a purchase that is up to you and they can only recommend specific products but they can force you to buy what they have.

Listen to what you are told and follow the aftercare to the letter and remember if you are having issues with bumps and lumps or discharge go back to the shop that did the piercing and talk to the piercer. They must help you resolve any healing issues you may be having. Don't solicit advice from anyone who is not a professional body piercer, just because one thing worked for someone else doesn't mean it will work for you. Healing issues need to be looked at first hand so the problem can be recognised and resolved, the internet is just a guessing game.

If you want to get your cartilage pierced the only place to get that piercing done is a professional body piercing studio, Ear cartilage piercing is not to be done with piercing guns (this is under the instructions of the actual piercing gun manufactures). Piercing gun studs are not designed to be used in ear cartilage. So open the phone book and look under "body piercing" or "tattoo studios*" (* they sometimes do both), give them a call and go see a professional body piercer.

How long to wait after getting your ear lobes pierced to get your cartilage pierced?

I'd wait till your lobes are completely or nearly completely healed. Cartilage piercings take longer to heal and if your body is trying to heal your lobes AND cartilage at the same time, it'll take even longer for your cartilage to heal. So, 2-3 mths.
