There are two ways in with the sick may receive a blessing. The first may be given by anyone who has faith in Christ, for He is the giver of all blessings. A father may bless any member of his family, this is called a Patriarchal Blessing, a mother may also give a Matriarchal blessing. These blessings are done in the household of faith. The other is done by one who holds the authority to anoint with consecrated oil, set apart for the soul purpose of anointing. After the anointing a blessing is given by one who holds the authority to perform such a blessing.
In the book of James it is written that one is to call for the elders(of the church) who are to annoint the afflicted with oil(olive is common) parying over them and the prayer of faith shall heal the sick.
James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
James 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
The prayer of faith really does the legwork here, but this is where it comes from traditionally. Again, Id like to emphasis the prayer of faith - the anointing itself doesn't do anything without the faith in the name and power of Jesus Christ.
Effects: 1. Save the sick
2. and be raised up.
3. Forgiven sins.

Strictly speaking, "ritual" is the prescribed words to a religious function, such as the Catholic Mass. The accompanying actions (body language) is "ceremonial". But the word "ritual" is commonly used to describe the ceremonial actions, and that is the sense in which it is used in this article. To understand ritualism in religion, it's helpful to compare it to the arts, such as music and dance. These arts express, non-verbally, something that is felt; though what they express cannot very effectively be put into words. Ritual in religion is like that. The ritual actions express the mysteries of the faith - things that go beyond our earthly knowledge. It's highly symbolic and can create in the participant or observer feelings of awe, beauty, comfort, inspiration, holiness - feelings that go beyond what words can express. Some people or religious groups are suspicious or disapproving (to say the least) of "ritualism", but this is largely due to a misunderstanding of what is happening. It may look like a form of magic which would naturally be condemned in many religions. In fact, the words "hocus-pocus" used in stage magic comes from a misunderstanding of the words "hoc es corpus" (behold the body) in the Catholic Mass as the consecrated bread is raised for the people to see - a ritual action representing the body of Christ. If there is any danger to ritualism, it is that some people may be "religious" because they are attracted to the ritual; which cannot be "true religion" in and of itself. However, the beauty and emotional response to ritualism has led countless people to a deeper faith, which is exactly what ritual is intended to do.

yes. the point of annointing the sick is to forgive their sins and let God know that they accept his offer of eternal life.
Oil is one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit. It is used in the sacraments of Holy Orders, Baptism, Confirmation, and Annointing of the sick.
When you know the person is very sick and on the dying bed, that is the exact time when you call a priest for annointing.
The annointing of the sick is a beautiful mass. You would want to go to this service if you feel that you are in need of God's help because you are undergoing surgery, you are sick and need His help, or you simply have a need for God's healing touch
The three oils are Sacred Chrism (used at Baptism, Confirmation and Ordination), Oil of Catechumens (used for blessing those preparing for Baptism), and Oil of the Sick (used for Annointing of the Sick/Extreme Unction).
annointing of the sick isn't a holiday or celebration. It is when elders of the church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) come together to give a very sick person a special blessing asking God to help this person get through their illness.
