The essential difference is that Hinduism is a belief system that requires faith, and Buddhism is a system of separating what we can know with relative certainty from what are assumptions, and basing our actions on those certainties instead of faith.
Hinduism is a word assigned by Westerners to a variety of belief systems that grew out of ancient Vedism, and involves identifying oneself as having an "atman" (Westerners translate as "soul") that is part of a larger All Being (Brahma); that our atman transmigrates life to life until we purify ourselves enough to gain knowledge that makes the situation clear, then we can become one with Brahma and end the cycle of reincarnation (also known as "samsara").
The Buddha denied that there was an eternal, unchanging "atman". His teaching was grounded in what we can do in this life to relieve suffering. He showed us ways to see for ourselves just how we cause our own problems, and offered a set of skills to see this more accurately and get past it.
