Neither. Both.

The overall message of Jesus has been twisted by various churches over the last 2000 years. His message was that by allowing the Holy Spirit to take control of your life, and doing things in the way that you know are right, you are living in the spirit of the Lord. At the time, the Jewish people had spent hundreds of years building up a book of laws that deal with all the conflicts of the various commandments and how each situation was to be treated. As each situation arose where there was conflict with the commandments or book of laws, jusges made decisions and the new decision was added to the book of law. By the time of Jesus that book had become so convoluted that no one could be certain they were doing the right thing. Many others lived by the book and figured that as long as they obeyed the book - anything else they did was OK. Jesus came to fix that problem and to allow non-jews a way into heaven. If you look closely i The Bible you will find various places where Jesus said one thing and later said something that would contradict it. This is because of this very thing. He did not expect someone to write down his words as a new book of law. He expected his example to be followed by giving those decisions to the Holy Spirit to make for us. And we sholuld realize that sometimes these decisions may very well conflict with certain social teachings. Each of us has our part to play in the world and our parts are DIFFERENT. Christianity is not about being the same as everyone else or He wouldn't have made us so different to begin with. It is about allowing the Holy Sprit into our lives and doing as it commands.

Comparison of the two passagesThe 6 items Jesus brought forth were essentially a subset of the famous 10, which were, in turn, a small portion of the entire Mosaic law. Neither list is meant to be the sum total of the Mosaic law.

When read in context, though, you should note that it's not about Jesus saying "this is all you have to do." After all, the story is about the rich young ruler who chose not to follow Jesus. In context we have this fellow who claims to have obeyed all the commandments, or at least those that Jesus put forth. (Note, by the way, that the Ten Commandments were not the entire law to which God held the Jews accountable.) Jesus told him there was one more thing he needed to do: to give away everything that he had, and then follow Him. The fellow went away sad, or grieved, because he was unwilling to give up what was more important to him than eternal life: his wealth.

Don't get hung up with a single verse or two. With very few exceptions verses cannot be taken out of context, any more than someone can take one of the sentences of this section out of context and get the full meaning of the text.

Mandate of Israel:Both.

They are all parts of the Torah that Yeshua quoted from. They are called the ten precepts. Since they are part of the Torah, then a believer of Yeshua is required to obey the Torah. You will probably find this confusing with Yeshua's teachings regarding His Grace. Yeshua expounded on the concept that a believer cannot depend on the Torah for salvation alone as it is difficult to be absolutely perfect in obedience as required. Instead, Yeshua was to served as the means to forgiveness from the transgressions (of the Torah/LAW), instead of totally basing one's faith on the forgiveness of sins (of the Torah/LAW).

YOU HAVE TO BE PERFECT IN OBEDIENCE to the TORAH/LAW to insure total forgiveness. No one in Israel was able to achieve that. And neither could the gentiles have, either.

A believer and follower of Yeshua can still try to base his/her safety on the TORAH. But, being human, no one can achieve absolute perfection in obedience as required in the Covenant. Only Yeshua can fill that gap because the authority was given to Him because of His proven capacity to perfectly obey the TORAH.

The wealth of the rich man in the verses was not meant to be taken as an evil thing that no man should achieve for. It is the obsession of wealth that makes one evil, not wealth itself. Yeshua was asking the rich man to give up his wealth because it was dragging him down. It is like having evil men for friends. To obey the precepts of the Torah, one should not follow the ways of those evil friends. But, if those friends are exerting an anti-TORAH influence, then they should be given up.

What are the similarities and difference between Judaism ad Christianity?

A comparative analysis of these two religions would show the similarities and the differences between them. One similarity is that they both worship (or claim to worship!) the same God. One difference is that Judaism is still awaiting the messiah, whereas Christianity believes that Jesus Christ is/was the messiah. There are many more similarities and differences, which a comprehensive comparative analysis will show.

What are differences of the ten commandments and the five pillars of Islam?

The Five Pillars of Christianity or the Five Pillars of Islam have no similarities to the Ten commandments. However, the Seven Pillars of Judaism are more "alike" to the Ten Commandments. Because, of the Fourth Pillar of Judaism: Law, which is the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings; the Old Testament, which includes the Ten Commandments.

How can the Old Testament be a moral guide to christians today?

There are many commandments and instructions in the Old Testament, including the Ten Commandments. God says He never changes, He's the same yesterday, today and forever, so the commands and instructions are applicable to us today.

Judiasm Ten commandments?

The so-called "Ten Commandments" recognized in Judaism can be found, in translation, in the Christian "old testament", in both Exodus and Deuteronomy. In fact, the entire "old testament" is a translation of the Torah. Notice the many differences in wording between the two instances of the Ten Commandments, in Exodus and Deuteronomy. There is much to be learned from this comparison.

What are the similarities and differences between early Judaism and Christianity What were the relationships between the two religions?

Similarities--same Bible. What one calls the Tanakh, the other calls the Old Testament. Same God. Differences--whether or not Jesus is the Messiah. Jews don't believe this. Christians do. Christianity is a "branch" off Judaism. The relationships between the two religions has been problematic as Christians participated in pogroms, the Holocaust, and currently influence U.S. policy with Israel. The current pope enraged many Jews as he reinstated a holocaust denier as bishop.

What are some similarities between just Christianity and Judaism?

The same God and the same Old Testament part of Holy Book. Basically, in Judaism they're still waiting for the Messiah while Christians believe it was Jesus Christ. He died and rised from the dead. Christians, as part of Him as the Church, died and rised from the dead as well and therefore doesn't need to keep the law from Old Testament because it is for those who are alive (St. Paul's words, kinda :) ). So you have the same God, Saints from the Old Testament, several important places, like Jerusalem. The same Ten Commandments (from Old Testament)... and I think that will be all. ***See Discussion page for additional comments:

How have Christians added to the word of God?

Christians did not add to the Word of God. The New Testament is the Word of God. It is a witness of Jesus and an interpretation thereof. The New Testament is originally handed down through the ages (textual commentary shows us only minor differences due to copying by hand).
