If it's an inguinal hernia, you will start to feel 'something' in your lower abdomen. Eventually, you will want to push where this feeling is with your hand. Pushing on it will make it feel better. It will present itself after being on your feet for a long time. After some time there will be a bulge and you will want to push it back more often which will make it feel better for awhile. Finally, maybe months, even years, depending on what kind of work you do, laborer, desk jockey, weight lifter, you will want to have it fixed. It's outpatient surgery. They have something called 'tension free' surgery which is nearly painless. My suggestion, if it bothers you, get it fixed, especially if you are relatively young and active. All this from someone who has had five (5) hernia repairs, three on the right side, two on the left. First time in 1962, last time in 1999. Yes, they can return.
A bulging in the abdominal wall caused my muscle weakness.

Anything that causes an increase in pressure in the abdomen can then cause a hernia, including obesity, lifting heavy objects, diarrhea or constipation, or persistent coughing or sneezing.

If you have a hernia, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • A noticeable protrusion in the groin area or in the abdomen
  • Feeling pain while lifting
  • A dull aching sensation
  • A vague feeling of fullness

For those who do have symptoms, they include heartburn and mid chest pain, usually 30-60 minutes after a meal, due to gastric acid from the stomach being pushed up into the esophagus(acid reflux) burning the esophagus, vomiting and regurgitating food which feels "stuck" and stomach pains are the most common symptoms.

A sharp pain in the lower abdomen after straining is almost certainly a hernia. On mayoclinic.com, you can search up additional symptoms and narrow it down to see what kind of hernia it is.
