Luke in his account of Christ's life presented the facts as told to him by eyewitnesses to Jesus life. From this, he gleaned the following themes - that Jesus was the Messiah and divine; that salvation was universally available, regardless of race, sex, social status, or health; and that Jesus lived a life of humility and compassion that culminated in suffering in our place. Christ triumphed over death, in order that all could live eternally with God if they accept it.

The writer Luke the physician, covers a lot of ground in his work, including an emphasis on Jesus as ''the son of man'' an allusion to Daniel the prophet. He also deals with, as one might imagine, Jesus as a compassionate healer of the sick. His major theme however is regarded by many as the great mission of Jesus ''to seek and to save that which was lost' (Luke 19:10).

More than any other gospel, the theme of Matthew's Gospel was that Jesus was the fulfilment of the Old Testament.

Matthew, in its nativity account and even his genealogy of Jesus, draws a strong parallel between Jesus and Moses of the Old Testament. The Gospel looks to the 'suffering servant' themes of the Book of Isaiah for inspiration, and right throughout draws as many parallels to the Hebrew scriptures as possible.

AnswerThe major themes of Matthew are that the life of Jesus had been prefigured in the Old Testament; that Jesus was the Messiah, born in Bethlehem and descended through Joseph from King David; that the birth of Jesus was divinely ordained; and that the risen Jesus had been seen by his disciples. It also contains a version of the story of the birth of Jesus, and his genealogy back through Joseph and King David. Matthew's Gospel, more so than any other gospel, refers to the Old Testament for apparent proof of the role and divinity of Jesus Answer

Matthew's themes have been described in the following way: the proclamation, power, progressive rejection, presentation, and proof of the King.

AnswerThe major themes of Matthew, additional to those found in Mark, are that the life of Jesus had been prefigured in the Old Testament; that Jesus was the Messiah, born in Bethlehem and descended through Joseph from King David; that the birth of Jesus was divinely ordained; and that the risen Jesus had been seen by his disciples. AnswerThe origin, birth and early life of Jesus; Jesus Baptisim; Chapter 5-7 -Sermon on the Mount; Healings & Miracles, Insturctionsand teaching to Apostles and followers (mainly with parables);Signs of the last days (chapters 24-25); Passover & The Last Supper, Jesus's betrayal, arrest, trial, & execution; Jesus's burial and resurrection. It is about the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.

A theme found throughout Matthew's Gospel is that the life and mission of Jesus is a fulfilment of the Old Testament. This theme is to be found in all the gospels, but no more so than in Matthew.

A theme in Luke's Gospel is to place the life and mission of Jesus in a historical context, demonstrating the reliability of the gospel story. A further theme is concern for the poor.

The original New Testament gospel was Mark's Gospel, which is a surprisingly complex document in spite of its apparent simplicity. It has been described as a story of the last week in the life of Jesus, with a long preamble. The interaction of themes throughout the gospel can best be seen from a summary of the parallel structure around which the gospel is written:
A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)

B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)

C . The voice of God from heaven, "Thou art my beloved son" (1:11)

D . The forty days in the wilderness as an allusion to Elijah and Moses (1:13)

E . The people were astonished at what Jesus taught (1:22)

F . Jesus casts out an unclean spirit (1:23-26)

G . Pharisees took counsel with the Herodians how they might destroy Jesus (3:6)

H . Demons, whenever they see Jesus, fall down and say that he is the Son of God.

-- Jesus commands that they tell no one of this (3:11-12)

I .. Jesus calls the 12 disciples (3:13-19)

J .. Jesus rejects his own family: he has a new family, his followers (3:31-35)

K . Jesus rebukes the wind (4:36-41)

L . The demoniac, wearing no clothes (5:15), cries out that Jesus not torment him and Jesus sends out the demons (5:1-20)

M . Jesus comes into his own country (6:1)
-- Where he was brought up

N . The people misunderstand Jesus and he can do no mighty work (6:2-6)

O . Jesus sends out the disciples and curses those who will not receive them (6:7-11)
-- in sending the disciples with authority and expecting all to receive them, Jesus is asserting his own authority

P . Herod thinks that Jesus is John the Baptist risen from the dead (6:14)

Q . Herodias and her daughter conspire to kill John the Baptist (6:16-29)

R . Feeding the thousands, and related miracles and discourses (6:33-8:21)

S . Who do people say that I am (8:27)

T . Peter affirms faith in Jesus as the Christ (8:29)

U . Whosoever shall be ashamed of me: of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed (8:38)

V . The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and scribes (8:31a)

W . Be killed and after three days rise again (8:31b)

X . Prophecy of second coming (9:1)- Jesus tells the disciples that some of them would not taste death until they saw the kingdom of God coming with power.

B' .The Transfiguration of Jesus (9:2-3)

C' .The voice of God from heaven, "This is my beloved son" (9:7)

D' . Jesus talks to Elijah and Moses then to the disciples about Elijah (9:4-13)

E' .A great multitude was amazed at Jesus (9:15)

F' .Jesus cast out a dumb spirit (9:17-27)

G' .They shall kill the Son of man and he shall rise on the third day (9:31)

H' .Jesus clarifies his divine status, saying that he is not God: "Why call me good? There is none good but God" (10:18)

I' . Peter says the disciples have left all and followed Jesus (10:28)

J' . Those who have left their family for Jesus have a new family: all Jesus' followers (10:29-30)

K'. Jesus rebukes the 'sons of thunder', James and John (10:35-45 - cf 3:17)

L' .Blind Bartimaeus cries out for mercy and casts off his clothes, then Jesus heals him (10:46-52)

M' .Jesus comes into Jerusalem (11:1-10)
-- Where he will die

N' .Jesus misunderstands the fig tree that can provide no fruit (11:13-14)

O' .Jesus casts out them that sold and bought in the Temple and curses them for making the Temple a den of thieves (11:15-17)
-- Jesus is asserting his authority

P' .Jesus asks whether the baptism of John is from heaven or of men, and the priests, scribes and elders can not answer (11:30-33)

Q' .Parable of husbandmen who conspire to kill the vineyard owner's son (12:1-9)

X' .Prophecy of second coming (chapter 13)

-- on clouds of glory, within the lifetimes of some of those to whom he was speaking

R' .The Last Supper (14:17-25)

S' .Art thou the Christ, Son of God (14:61)

T' .Peter denies Jesus three times (14:66-72a)

U' .And when he thought thereon, Peter wept (14:72b)

V' .The chief priests, elders and scribes delivered Jesus to Pontius Pilate (15:1)

-- Delivering Jesus is a similar concept to rejecting him.
-- Both parts of the pair involve chief priests, elders and scribes

W' .Jesus dies and on the third day rises again (15:37, 16:6)

A' .The young man explains the departure of Jesus(16:6-8)

Among the themes that can be identified here, the most consistent is Jesus as the Son of God. Yet, he makes no such claim for himself and even orders Peter to tell no one, when Peter ventures the opinion (event T) that Jesus is the Messiah or Christ (anointed one).

The matching events C and C' very definitely have God say that Jesus is his beloved son, but no more. Jesus was always careful to refer to himself merely as the Son of Man, and it is left to the demons (event H) and the high priest (event S'), as outsiders, to talk of Jesus as the Son of God. In event H', Jesus clarifies that he is not God: "Why call me good? There is none good but God" (10:18). It does seem that the author had to be careful not to offend against Judaism, whereas ten to twenty years later the author of Matthew no longer had this concern.

Antiquity and virtue

The author we now know as Luke based his Gospel on Mark's Gospel and added material from a number of sources, along with his own embellishments. In doing so, he must have known that the resultant Gospel was not a true account of the life of Jesus. Luke may have been writing an apology (formal defence) for a wider audience than Christians and potential converts. Upstart religions were frowned upon by the Romans, obliging Christians to demonstrate antiquity and virtue, creating one of the themes in Luke. In this context, antiquity was achieved by representing Jesus, his family and associates as pious Jews, while virtue was claimed from demonstrations of high communal ethic, political respectability and cooperation with the Roman peace.

Holy Spirit
Burton L. Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) says that an important theme in Luke is that the Holy Spirit was especially active in the life of Jesus. It was the Holy Spirit that prepared for his coming in the person of John the Baptist (Luke 1:1 5-17, 67). It was the Holy Spirit that "overshadowed" Mary his mother (Luke 1:35). And it was the Holy Spirit that inspired the devout Simeon in the temple to foretell the child's destiny as "the Lord's messiah" and a "light to the gentiles" (Luke 2:25-26). It was the Holy Spirit that descended upon him in baptism (Luke 3:22), led him into the wilderness for testing (Luke 4:1) and filled him for his return to Galilee (Luke 4:14). There, in his first public appearance in the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus stood up and read from the prophet "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me . . ." (Luke 4:16-21). Luke reported Jesus' announcement to his disciples that he would send "what my Father promised" (Luke 24:49), and in Acts of the Apostles this was the Holy Spirit that "came upon" the disciples at Pentecost (Acts 1-2).

Compassion and respect for the poor

Finally, Luke emphasised compassion and respect for the poor.

What are the specific characteristics of each gospel and how do these relate to the main theme of each gospel?

A:Mark's Gospel was the first New Testament Gospel to be written and is now known to have been the major source used, directly or indirectly by the other three gospels in the New Testament. By discussing this Gospel first, it may be possible to gain a better understanding of the other gospels. Mark's GospelThe characteristic of Mark's Gospel comes from the literary genius of its author. Although superficially written in a rough, ungrammatical style, its author has been described as one of the greatest writers of his time. The Gospel consists of an overall chiastic structure, with a shorter chiastic structure for the last twenty four hours in the life of Jesus. The author developed an almost unique method of emphasis now known as Markan intercalation and used mimesis flags, an ancient Greek device often used to identify a source. The last week in the life of Jesus begins at chapter 11 and forms a substantial part of the entire Gospel, with the inevitable crucifixion as its dominant theme. The Gospel's chiastic structure structure leads us inevitably to the crucifixion of Jesus.Matthew's GospelThe dominant theme specific to Matthew's Gospel is that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament. More than any other gospel, it uses references to the Old Testament to show that the life of Jesus was foreshadowed or even prophesied in the Hebrew scriptures.Luke's GospelA theme of Luke's Gospel is that the events surrounding the life of Jesus really happened, and that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament. A further theme specific to Luke is that Christianity is for the poor. This Gospel characteristically seeks to place events in a historical context. Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that while Luke likes to set his Christian drama in the context of well-known events from antiquity, he sometimes does so inaccurately.John's GospelJohn's Gospel is the most theological of the New Testament gospels. An important theme characteristic of this Gospel alone, is that Jesus was divine and pre-existing. Thus, the Gospel even opens by saying that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Two other important themes were 'doubting Thomas' and the primacy of the 'disciple whom Jesus loved' over Peter. Based on this, athough it is no longer readily apparent to a casual reader, John's Gospel was what we could now call a political document.
