AnswerIt depends on what you are asking. There are lots of ways to distinguish types of computer software. I will list some of the 'types' of computer software:

Shareware and Freeware Shareware: Shareware is a highly common form of software. Computer games, photo editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop, anti-virus software, file converters and other programs that you buy are considered Shareware. Shareware is usually developed for the purpose of profiting from the money people pay for it. There are many different ways that companies make their customers pay for the software. Some of these I will list below:

1. Companies allow you to download a free 30-day (or other amount of time) trial for the software, and at the end of the 30 days, the software will no longer operate unless you "register" the program. "Registering" a program typically means that you pay the company, and they send you an email containing a "registration" key (which is usually 24-60 characters, contains letters, numbers and sometimes punctuation characters), and you enter that key when the program prompts you to.

2. Companies allow you to download a free trial edition, which operates the same as above, except you can only use the program several times. A very common example of this is the restriction of being able to save a file. Some programs only allow you to save a file 3-10 times, and after you save it up to the limit, you are never able to save a file (usually rendering the program useless) until you register or buy the program. 3.Some companies allow you to download a "Light Edition" of their program, which does not use a "30 day trial," or "limited functions." Instead, the program has limited features (e.g. if it is a photo editing program, the light edition will not contain "Red-Eye" removal) and will constantly "nag" the consumer to upgrade the program. Some software programs do not "nag" the consumer as much as other programs do. Common forms of "nagging" include pop-up windows that tell you to upgrade/register, blinking text that tells you to upgrade/register, upon the exiting of the program another pop-up window appears telling you to upgrade/register, etc...

4. Companies allow you to download a program that does not nag the consumers at all, does not limit the features at all and operates perfectly, but the company encourages you to buy the enhanced version of the program, which has more features and flexibility. This is usually the most convenient type of shareware because it does not drive the consumers crazy in the attempt to get them to purchase the software.

There is another branch of software though, that does not intend the consumers to purchase anything at all. This type of software is called "Freeware." Freeware is usually developed by hobbyists or independent programmers who like making their life and other people's lives easier.

There are other ways of distinguishing computer software as well, I will not go too in-depth with these, (I've already spent an hour answering this!) because they are not as complex.

There are Utilities and Games.

Utilities are basically photo editing programs, anti-virus software, web-browsers, email clients, etc...

Games are basically... well, games. Commercial quality games (such as Starcraft or Warcraft) are usually Shareware. There are some websites though that give away free games, a very popular one being www.yoyogames.com , which allows you to download free games made by programmers using the Game Maker program (which is a #3 Shareware program for $20.00, available at the www.yoyogames.com website)
