There are four main types of stars, which can further be subdivided into many smaller groups as show below. They are:

Main sequence (dwarf) stars: Most stars will spend most of their time in this condition

Subdwarfs: exceptionally small and dim stars

Giants: Exceptionally large stars. They can be high mass and live short lives or they can be main-sequence stars nearing the end of their life.

Stellar remnants: The leftovers after a star dies. This can be a white/black dwarf, neutron star, black hole, etc.

Stars are organized into groups based on their spectral type and absolute magnitude.

Some of the different types of stars are:-

  • Hyper giants - like VY Canis Majoris
  • Supergiants - like Deneb
  • Bright giants - like β Scuti
  • Giants - like Pollux
  • Subgiants - like ε Reticuli
  • Dwarfs - like our own Sun
  • Sub dwarfs like - SSSPM J1930-4311

However, different classification group stars in different naming convention but the overall value of the star is the same.

Spectral types:

  • O,B,A,F,G,K,M types of stars which is based on there luminosity verses their temperature.

Stellar remnants are:

  • White dwarf
  • Neutron star
  • Pulsar
  • Black hole

Other types are:

  • Red giant
  • Red dwarf
  • Brown dwarf
  • Yellow dwarf - Our Sun
  • Brown dwarf
  • Black dwarf.

Some of the less known types are:-

  • Carbon dwarf
  • Methane dwarf
  • Carbon stars
  • Wolf Rayet
  • Protostar - the first stage in a stars formation

and....... many more.

Stars are classified by their type and temperature. Amongst some of the types of stars in our galaxy are white dwarfs, blue giants, and red supergiants. Our own Sun is a yellow dwarf, and like most stars is a main-sequence star.

VY Canis Majoris is the largets nearest one we know to date

VV Cephei

Betelgeuse is a favourite as it is some times pronounced Beetle juice

KW Sagittarii

Antares

S Pegasi

S Orionis

KW Sagittarii

That will do for you for know

When you know all about these then you should find out the entire list of massive stars

There are four types of binary stars.

  • Visual binaries: Where the distance between the two stars can be distinguished with a telescope.
  • Spectroscopic binaries: This is where the spectral shift switches between red and blue as one star moves about the common centre of mass.
  • Eclipsing binaries: Is where the stars are inline and one star eclipses the other: I.e. it moves in front of its companion.
  • Astrometric binaries: Is where the visual star appears to "wobble" without any other visual reason. This is normally the case for a high density pair, where one is a neutron star.
