Best Answer

Scarecrows are supposed to frighten birds such as crows away from farm crops and garden edibles. They're supposed to lead potential eaters of growing plants to believe that the area is guarded day and night. Additionally, they give an aesthetic, traditional look to a garden plot or a farmed area.

A scarecrow or hay-man is a decoy in the shape of a human which is dressed in old clothes and placed in fields to discourage birds such as crows or sparrows from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops. The presence of a human-like figure is thought to spook animals that would otherwise land in a farmer's fields and munch on the fruits and vegetables being grown.
