The vow of celibacy is practiced by Roman Catholic priests and religious brothers and sister/nun to consecrate themselves to God. They promised to be celibate in order to imitate the life Jesus the Christ.
the three vows of a priest are 1. poverty 2. chastity 3. obedience
Regular diocesan priests make promises of celibacy and obedience to the Bishop. Members of Religious Orders (Nuns/Sisters and Friars/Monks) take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience to their Superior/Abbott.
Priests must make a promise of celibacy when they are ordained a deacon. A religious priest previously would have made vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, OR Stability, Conversatio Morum, and Obedience depending on his Order. To be ordained a priest, no vows are required except a promise of obedience to your bishop and his successors.
There is no such ceremony for priests. Priests, as such, do not take "vows", they make a promise of obedience to their bishop at their ordination and the obligation to celibacy is imposed by Canon Law. The only ones who take vows, as such are solemnly professed religious, such as monks and nuns who make solemn vows of stability, converso morum, and obedience at their solemn profession. Friars, brothers, and sisters usually make perpetual promises or simple vows of poverty, chastity and obedience at their profession.
Typically they are poverty, chastity (celibacy in some cases) and obedience. Some orders will include other kinds of vows as well, depending on the rules set forth by the founders.
The goal of Jainism is to attain moksha (enlightenment). This is done by observing the five 'Great Vows': non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, celibacy, and non-materialism.
There were four for monks and nuns: the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, plus the vow of stability (meaning a commitment to remain within their monastic community for the remainder of their lives).Friars took only three vows (poverty, chastity and obedience).
Celibacy celibacy celibacy! Wait until marriage to have a boyfriend or Allah will hurt you violently.
Or, just become Byzantine Catholic rite where married priests are permitted (marry before priestly vows). I think some other Eastern Catholic rites permit it, too, but I'm not sure.
Roman Catholic Answer:A diocesan priest takes no vows. He is obligated to pray The Divine Office each day, and he makes a solemn promise of obedience to his Bishop when he is ordained. He also makes a promise of celibacy (this may be a vow, it is spoken of as a solemn vow in my pre-Vatican II dictionary, but I can find no reference to it in the current Catechism).
Priests do not make vows. They will have made a promise of celibacy before they are ordained a deacon, and they make a promise of obedience to the bishop and his successors at their ordination. The only ones who make vows are monks and nuns, which has nothing to do with the priesthood, although some monks may later be ordained priests. As to Polish and American priests, the procedure for becoming a priest is exactly the same in Poland or in the United States, it has been carefully regulated by the Vatican ever since the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century.
