The Qur?an also speaks of similarity in terms of creation. God tells us that He created a single soul and from it its mate, then He made countless men and women from those two (see Qur?an 4:1). The Qur?an does not contain the belief that the man alone is created in the image of God.

Because of this fundamental similarity between men and women, the Qur?an declares that women have rights similar to the rights against them according to what is equitable (see Qur?an 2:228).

In a time when women were devalued and female infants were buried alive, the Qur?an raised the value of women and prohibited female infanticide. Due to the Qur?an, this practice was abolished, but in recent times advances in the science of genetic selection has encouraged some unbelievers to practice a modern form of female infanticide.

The Qur?an also abolished the practice whereby inheritance went to only the oldest male heir. Instead, a woman can inherit from her father, her husband, and her childless brother (see Qur?an 4:7, 32, 176).

In Islam when a woman gets married she does not surrender her maiden name, but maintains her distinct identity. Some Muslim women have adopted the surnames of their husbands, but this is due to cultural influence, not Islam.

In a Muslim marriage the groom gives a dowry to the bride, not to her father. This becomes her private property to keep or spend, and is not subject to the dictates of her male relatives. Any money she earns or receives is similarly her very own.

Under Islamic Law a woman cannot be married without her consent. She has final approval on a marriage partner and she can repudiate a marriage arranged without her consent. She also has the right to initiate a separation from marriage if her rights under marriage are not being granted.

Widows have the right to remarry, and they are in fact encouraged to do so.

The Qur?an places on men the responsibility of protecting and maintaining their female relatives. This relieves women of the need to earn their own living. It also means that a man must provide for his wife even if she has money of her own. She is not obligated to spend her money in the maintenance of her family. Incidentally, a woman is also not required to cook for her family, although she may do so out of love and compassion. The example of our noble prophet, on whom be peace, is that although he was such a great leader, he assisted in the housecleaning and mended his own clothes.

In return for the added responsibility, the Qur?an gives men the degree of leadership (see Qur?an 2:228; 4:34). This does not mean that men should dominate women, but rather that they should deal with them in kindness, mercy, and love (see Qur?an 4:19; 30:21).

What are women's rights in Islam?

Courtesy of Islamic.Org

In a truly Islamic society women have the following rights in Islam:

1. The right and duty to obtain education.

2. The right to have their own independent property.

3. The right to work to earn money if they need it or want it.

4. Equality of reward for equal deeds.

5. The right to express their opinion and be heard.

6. The right to provisions from the husband for all her needs and more.

7. The right to negotiate marriage terms of her choice.

8. The right to obtain divorce from her husband, even on the grounds that she simply can't stand him. (pls note that God deeply frowns upon divorce as a solution unless there is hardly any other alternative but it does not mean that men have more right to divorce their wives than women do.)

9. The right to keep all her own money (she is not responsible to maintain any relations).

10. The right to get sexual satisfaction from her husband.

11. custody of their children after divorce.

12. to refuse any marriage that does not please them

and more...

Here is an article taken from a speech which details some of these rights: Ideals and role models for women in Islam

http://www.themodernreligion.com/women/w_roles_ideals.htm

1. In the past women were degraded and used as objects of lust

The following examples from history amply illustrate the fact that the status of women in earlier civilizations was very low to the extent that they were denied basic human dignity:

  1. Babylonian Civilization:

The women were degraded and were denied all rights under the Babylonian law. If a man murdered a woman, instead of him being punished, his wife was put to death.

  2. Greek Civilization:

Greek Civilization is considered the most glorious of all ancient civilizations. In most city-states, specifically Athens, women were deprived of all rights and were looked down upon. In Greek mythology, an 'imaginary woman' called 'Pandora' is the root cause of misfortune of human beings. The Greeks considered women to be subhuman and inferior to men. Though chastity of women was precious, and women were held in high esteem, the Greeks were later overwhelmed by ego and sexual perversions. Prostitution became a regular practice amongst all classes of Greek society. Spartan women had a higher degree of independence and importance as they were in charge of running daily affairs when the men were at war, but this was an anomaly, and female infanticide was still common.

  3. Roman Civilization:

When Roman Civilization was at the zenith of its 'glory', a man even had the right to take the life of his wife. Prostitution and nudity were common amongst the Romans.

  4. Pre-Islamic Arabia:

Before Islam spread in Arabia, the Arabs looked down upon women and very often when a female child was born, she was buried alive.

2. Islam uplifted women and gave them equality and expects them to maintain their status.

Islam uplifted the status of women and granted them their just rights 1400 years ago. Islam expects women to maintain their status.

Answer A

In laymans terms, it teaches that the woman you are married to has "got your back" - like a best mate in life, i.e: she keeps your secrets, helps you , protects you and looks after your children well, and makes sure you are in good health.

The Quran repeatedly makes the point that women are equal, each responsible for the other: man and woman are a team, created slightly differently so that they can compliment each other and join forces for success in this world and the hereafter. He is slightly stronger so he can protect, she is able to reproduce and care so she can raise kids.

Answer B (Hint from who posed the question):

The reason I asked the question is that I recently read a long article by Taslima Nasrin titled "My Struggle for Equality". Ms. Nasrin was born to a Muslim family in what is today Bangladesh. In the article Ms. Nasrin states: " Islam does not consider a woman a separate human being. Man was the original creation; womankind was created secondarily, for the pleasure of man. Islam considers a woman to be a slave or sexual object, nothing more. Her role is to stay at home and to obey her husband, for this is her religious duty. Women are considered weak, so they should be taken care of: their bodies and minds, their desires and wishes, their rights and freedom must be controlled by men. In marriage, Islam protects the rights of men only. Once the marriage is consummated, women have no rights whatever. The Qu'an gives total freedom to men saying "Your women are as your field, go unto them as you will" (2.223). The Hadith says that two prayers that never reach the heavens are those of an escaping slave and those of the reluctant woman who frustrates her husband at night".

"Women's testimonies are not allowed in cases of marriage, divorce and "Hudu" (a class of offenses that includes theft, fornication, consumption of alcohol and apostasy). When it is allowed, the testimony of two women is worth that of one man".

"If a woman is raped, she has to produce four male witnesses for the court in order for the charge to stand".

Answer C (Comments on the hint of Answer B):
  • The saying that 'Islam does not consider a woman a separate human being' is not true. The religion of Islam, revealed about 600 years after Christianity) was the first religion to give the woman the rights to have her own properties, investments, and earnings in addition to her rights to work and learn. In both Christianity and Judaism, Women were considered of lower grade and treated as a man property and never given her rights until the 19th century. Refer to the related link below for more information on women in Christianity before the 19th century. One of their quotes is by Martin Luther (1483 to 1546):"If they [women] become tired or even die, that does not matter. Let them die in childbirth, that's why they are there." andSt. Thomas Aquinas (1225 to 1274 CE):"As regards the individual nature, woman is defective and misbegotten, for the active force in the male seed tends to the production of a perfect likeness in the masculine sex; while the production of woman comes from a defect in the active force or from some material indisposition, or even from some external influence."
  • Quran commands to live with wives in kindness and peace and dignity and tolerance. God says in Quran, Muslims holy book:
" وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ﴿٢١"

Meaning English translation: "And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect. (21)" [Quran, chapter 30, verse 21]

  • Quran says if you hated your wife for any reason then be aware that you may hate them for some reasons while they are good for many other reasons so be kind to them and don't go for divorce unless you find it hopeless to continue.

Meaning English Translation :"O you who believe! it is not lawful for you that you should take women as heritage against (their) will, and do not straiten them in order that you may take part of what you have given them, unless they are guilty of manifest indecency, and treat them kindly; then if you hate them, it may be that you dislike a thing while Allah has placed abundant good in it." [Quran, chapter 4, verse 19]

  • Quran says if you can't reach common understanding with your wife, select one from your family and your wife selects one from her family for arbitration and solving the problem.

English meaning translation :"And if you fear a breach between the two, then appoint judge from his people and a judge from her people; if they both desire agreement, Allah will effect harmony between them, surely Allah is Knowing, Aware. (35) "[Quran, chapter 4, verse 35]

  • In other Quran verses, God commands the husband, in case of divorce, not to get back any from what was given to her on marriage and to separate with mutual respect and understanding.

Meaning English translation: "And if you wish to have (one) wife in place of another and you have given one of them a heap of gold, then take not from it anything; would you take it by slandering (her) and (doing her) manifest wrong? (20)"[Quran, chapter 4, verse 20]

  • Also, Islam gives the right to wife to seek divorce if she feels that no longer possible to continue in marriage with her husband. So, if beating or hitting wife is a rule how wife selects to continue with her husband.
  • In the last prophet speech during his Hajj, he advised Muslims to be kind with their wives and with orphans.
  • Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him, never insulted or bated any of his wives. It is believed by all Muslims that the prophet is their model and Guide in all his sayings, doings and practices.
  • As for the saying that 'the testimony of two women is worth that of one man' is not degrading the woman status but because women are not so heavily involved in work and business life. The evidence is that in other testimony fields only women testimony is considered.
  • as for the "If a woman is raped, she has to produce four male witnesses for the court in order for the charge to stand", this is according civil laws not Quran guides or Sunna. For example this does not apply, per religion, in Egypt.

Well Quran sheriff tells womans to keep there selfs covered from head to toe.

Quran teaches to beat the women if they disobey(Surah 4:34). Tabari IX:113 "Allah permits you to shut the woman in separate rooms and to beat them, but not severely. If they abstain, they have the right to food and clothing. Treat women well for they are like domestic animals and they prossess nothing themselves."

Eg: Mohammed beating wife: Sahih Muslim vol.2 book 4 ch.352, no.2127 p.462.

Quran speaks equally about Muslim men and women regarding obligations, duties, rights, and God (Allah in Arabic) rewarding and punishments. In the meantime, Quran does not ignore the physical and psychological differences between man and woman considering these differences as matters of complementing rather than conflicting each other.

Per Quran and prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teachings woman rights are secured regarding education, working, earning, making business contracts, practicing free will in choosing marriage partner, having rights in inheritance, asking for divorce, sharing political life and voting, ... well before all these rights were approved in Western countries and even in the United Nations.

Full woman rights are developed and guranteed by the Islam fundametals and basic priniciples as specified and commanded by Quran and prophet Muhammad teachings. Those who deprive the woman from those rights, as fixed by Quran and prophet teachinmgs, should not be called fundamenalists. They are just following the traditions and local practices that are prevailing in those Islamic countries. Canwomen vote in Islam and what is the source of this knowledge?

Women can definitely vote in Islam. The Quran gives men and women equal rights, it's a different thing when some Muslim countries have leaders who suppress the rights of women. Pakistan which is a Muslim country actually had a woman president for a few years. Whenever anyone says that Islam doesn't give women equal rights that is far from the truth, it's all written in the Quran. Women's rights don't get suppressed because of Islam it's because of bad leaders and governments.

In What way did the quran affect the role of Islam women?
