British Columbia is located near a plate boundary that has two segments to it. Off the coast of southern British Columbia is a subduction zone where the Juan de Fuca plate slides into and under the North American Plate. Off the coast of northern Biritish Columbia is a transform boundary where the Pacific Plate slides past the North American Plate. As these plates move, they tend to "snag" on one another and build up tension. When the plates slip and release tension, earthquakes occur.
