At the time, Amundsen had already been to Antarctica, and had been part of the crew that first wintered-over in Antarctica, on a ship in 1899. Although there had been attempts to reach the South Pole in subsequent years, this benchmark had not yet been met. So in 1910, Amundsen prepared for a polar journey, and en route, notified his crew -- and his competitor, Captain Scott -- that he was headed for Antarctica.
