The Federal secret agent James Andrews put in motion following plan, after being authorised by general O. Mitchell, commander of the 3rd division of the Army of the Cumberland.
Supported by a patrol of soldier in disguise Andrews penetrated in Georgia and stole a steam engine.
They then went towards Chattanooga interrupting the railways as they were approaching to the city, in order to isolate it from the east
But the Confederates succeeded in capturing Andrews and a part of his comrades before the mission could be accomplished. They were trialled and condemned to death as spies.
