He won the Coretta Scott King Award for African American authors five times (1980, 1985, 1989, 1992, 1997). In 1994 he was awarded the American Library Association's Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime contribution to young adult literature. He won the Newbery Honor Award two times (1988, 1992). He was the first winner of the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature in 1999. Two times he was the National Book AwardFinalist (1999, 2005).
