Mestizo (Portuguese, Mestiço; French, Métis: from Late Latin mixticius, from Latin mixtus, past participle of miscere, "to mix") is a term of Spanish origin used to designate people of mixed European and indigenous non-European ancestry. The term has traditionally been applied mostly to those of mixed European and indigenous Amerindian ancestry who inhabit the region spanning Latin America. In other regions and countries previously under Spanish, Portuguese or French colonial rule, variants of the term may also be in usage for people of other mixtures. In the Philippines, the term Mestizo originally bore the connotation of mixed Spanish and Filipino, whereas nowadays the term is used to identify individuals who are mixed indigenous Austronesian and European or any other Foreign ancestry.

Mestizo is the original Spanish term for an individual who has mixed white/European (Spanish, Portuguese, French) and Native American descent.

A more modern, broad definition of Mestizo is used when referring to anyone of mixed European and non-European (excluding African) heritage. African-Europeans are known as Mulatto (plural: Mulattoes).

This is a very completed question due to the meaning of the word. Most Mexicans are of mixed blood and unknown European linage. The word mestizo isn't always a friendly word. It draws the out feelings of illegitimacy or shame etc. This is a word that was used in a derogatory manner for centruies. As Ilan Stavans wrote in her conclusion for a humanities piece "In short, the Diccionariomight say that a mestizo is a person or culture born from different races, but it is something far bigger yet less tangible: a state of mind."

Mestizos are the result of interracial marriages between Native American people and Spanish conquistadors, who conquered and settled Mexico since the 16th century.

Nowadays, between 60 and 80% of the current population is considered mestizo; genetically speaking, most mestizos have 70% of genetic components from Native Americans, 25% of Caucasian and 5% of African.
