What came first- the dog or the Wolf?

Dogs were domesticated at a far earlier point than cats and were seen as companions far earlier into their domestication than cats. (Cats were primarily domesticated to take care of rat problems, whereas dogs were domesticated to help with the hunt for food.)

The dog is believed to have come from the wolves. They were just tamer wolves, which got tamer due to food left out by people and gradually over time when people started to "interfere".

They took the smallest from a litter, and bred it with another very small specimen. Then the smallest of the next generation, and the next, until they eventually shrunk to something the size of a chihuahua. But this takes many many decades. Characteristics also were chosen out of litters to create certain breeds, creating other types of dogs. But all the dog breeds didn't come from just one type of wolf, of course. They came from lots of different wolves. That's how you get many different colors, or the length of a dog's hair, etc. Plus, they adapt to the changes in the environment, too, like the Saluki with short hair since it lives in Egypt
