Answer:

Horses cannot eat meat. They eat plants, grass etc...

ANSWER #2: Horses should NOT EAT: peanut butter or peanuts (no nuts of any kind) avocados, raw potatoes, rhubarb, tobacco, cherries, tomatoes, fresh grass clippings (from lawn mowing), fresh bread, doughnuts, pastries, (any bread becomes doughy in the gut & can cause impaction colic), chocolate, bread, tea or soda, onions, poison ivy is toxic, yew bushes daffodil geraniums, holly, wilted cherry tree branches, foxglove, nightshade.

From April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: Don't forget OILS. Horses do not have a gallbladder and can have trouble digesting oil. Gallbladders produce bile which breaks down oil, and although the liver will produce a small amount, it is not sufficient for large quantities of oil. (check out the video on oils at Horseman's U.com: Videos/Great trainers & clinicians/Marijke van de Water).

Always remember what a horse eats in the wild. Will he come across seaweed? Possibly, but don't feed in large amounts for extended periods. Will he come across chocolate, bread or coffee? (thank you above).

I have to disagree with the oils. I have been adding vegetable oils to the feed of horses for years. Mostly when they are low in weight due to an illness, neglect, or old age. I generally add corn oil, but have used soy oil, which is often the standard "vegetable oil" you buy at the grocery store. They sell numerous products that contain oils for adding weight as well as making the coat shiny. Most of these are more costly and do not list the type of oil the product contains, but they praise their products and sell a lot of it. I should mention that products and feeds sold for elderly horses, such as "Purina Equine Senior" contain a lot of fats, which are mostly derived from some form of vegetable oil.

Many elderly horses begin to lose teeth, and their digestion begins to slow down, and thus these horses are "hard keepers", meaning they need extra care and feed to maintain a good body condition and weight. These special "senior feeds" are one of several ways to help.

If you give oil to a horse, most horses will eat it in their grain or pelleted feed, although they tend to turn up their noses, and make funny facial gestures the first few times you give it to them. Eventually most will eat the feed and in a few days they no longer care about the oil in their feed.

If you give oil, start out slow. For the average 1000lb horse, begin with no more than 1/8 cup, and slowly work up to 1/4 cup per day. Most average horses will tolerate around 1/2 cup after a few weeks up building up the amount. Carefully watch the horse's stool. If their stool begins to look runny, back down the amount a little. Otherwise work up to a maximum of about 1/2 cup per day for a 1000lb horse. (Less for small ponies, more for large drafts).

NEVER LET YOUR HORSE EAT RAGWORT!!!!!
Buttercups and ragwort are some plants that horses shouldn't eat, as well as acorns, water hemlock, lupine, loco weed, and other poisonous plants. They can't be fed high amounts of legumes like clover and alfalfa because it's too rich for them, and they can't be out too long on lush pasture (even if it's straight grass) in the spring otherwise they'll get founder.

Celery can be very bad for horses. When they swallow, it can easily get caught in their throats. Onions are poisonous as are lawn or hedge clippings, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, tomatoes, acorns, peanuts, and ABSOLUTELY no chocolate! But horses do like to eat many other things too. Some of them include carrots, apples, sunflower seeds (shell or no shell), pitted dates, raisins, sugar cubes, hay cubes, and peppermints.
