Any nations' ability to affect other nations can be divided into two broad categories: hard power and soft power.

Hard power, such as military force or the threat of military force, economic sanctions (blocking trade, other money measures).

Soft Power, such as negotiation, arbitration through international organizations, the bully pulpit, or cultural pressure (common values).

For some reason I can't paste the URL here, but wikipedia has a page on this called "power in international relations" that should be able to bring you to some more research-paper-friendly sources.
