If your cat has teeth that are affected by some kind of pathology (e.g. abscess, peridontal inflammation etc) then it may require the tooth to be removed. This can be performed by your vet under a general anaesthetic. If the tooth is painful for another reason then you can buy painkilling drugs from your vet (e.g meloxicam). It is very important that you do not use human painkilling drugs as many are dangerous and possibly even lethal to cats.
You can use a cold compress to help with the tooth pain your cat is experiencing. Call your Vet and make an appointment to fix the problem.

Whatever a qualified vet suggests you give it !
If your cat is in pain when eating, it is very likely that the cat has some sort of dental or gum infection and should be taken to the vets immediately to be treated. There is very little you can do at home as dental infections usually start below the gumline and not on the tooth itself.
a lethal injection
The pain in his jaw subsided a few hours after the tooth extraction.
If this has happened take your cat to the vet immediately! This is a serious injury and should be handled by a vet. The vet can clean and treat the wound. They will give your cat antibiotics to insure deadly infection does not set in, and will give your cat safe medications to alleviate pain. It is not fair to make the cat suffer by not taking it to a vet, and human pain medication is usually lethal to cats. So do not try to medicate your cat yourself.
This cat may have an infected tooth. A visit to the vet will answer this question.
