Richard Petty turned 21 years old on July 2, 1958. He again approached his father about driving a race car. Lee gave him a rather tired, but true 1957 Olds convertible that he was no longer using. On July 12, 1958, Richard, accompanied by his brother towed the Oldsmobile behind Richard's 1956 Dodge to a dirt track in Columbia, South Carolina. Richard acquainted himself well for his first race. He survived and finished in the money in 6th for a pay day of $200. Richard went on to compete in 8 more races in 1958. He finished 36th in points.
