The answer to this question could be a lot more detailed then just the North's victory during the American Civil War.

I think the best answer to this question would be when both sides of the debate began refusing to come to any type of agreement and the North's past actions of appeasement empowered the South to ask for greater demands that the Northern Abolitionist could not or would not permit to go unchecked.

Likewise, authors such as Harriet Beecher Stowe (and many others) wrote horrific books about the horrors of Slavery... and many in the North became outraged at what they felt was immoral and inhuman treatment of the Africans in the South.
