The "industrial Revolution" is generally perceived to have originated in England, in the 1700's. But, the same conditions applied to the U.S. and England. There were two main precursors:

1 - Improved agricultural productivity such as to reduce the number of farm workerrs and thus "free" them, whether they wanted to be freed or not, from the toil of the farm, and exchange that for the toil of the factory.

2 - The rise of substantial power supplies - early on such things as water power, and later, more importantly, steam power, to operate industrial machinery.

The cities were the point of population growth as they formed natural shipping "basins" for raw commodities, and likewise had the transportation facilities, especially shippoing ports, to ship the finished goods. They also offered a larger number of skilled artisans to draw from to maintain the more sophisticated equipment.
