The Battle of Little Bighorn was caused by the discovery of gold in the Black Hills by George A. Cluster himself. The Black Hills were on land that had been reserved for the Sioux. Stuck between upholding an Indian alliance and gold, it's obvious which Americans chose.
Gold had been discovered on Native American territory. When they refused to leave their homes to accommodate gold prospecting, the United States went to war with them. In the Battle of Little Big Horn which fought June, 1876. General George Armstrong Custer led his troops to a sound defeat by Sitting Bull's warriors, in a battle that came to be known as 'Custer's Last Stand.'
Sioux and Cheyenne Indians were upset with whites who continually intruded into their sacred lands in the Black Hills, and defiantly left their reservations in late 1875. They gathered with Sitting Bull in Montana. The government tried to persuade them to go back to the reservation and they refused. The government labeled them as hostile, and sent the army to deal with them. Custer, leading the 7th Cavalry, came upon the Indians camped in the Bighorn Valley. There were no survivors in the Cavalry unit after the battle.
The Battle of Little Bighorn happened when the US government discovered that there was yet another goldfield underneath the land of the Sioux. The US Government offered to purchase the land, but the Sioux refused and set up a warfront to repel the US, they reacted in the same manner, attacking the Sioux clan and trying to gain access to their land.
