There are several causes of hyperthyroidism. Most often, the entire gland is overproducing thyroid hormone. Less commonly, a single nodule is responsible for the excess hormone secretion, called a "hot" nodule

Hyperthyroid symptoms can be the result of many things including:

  • Graves' disease
  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis/thyrotoxicosis
  • A "hot" nodule
  • Too much iodine consumption
  • Pituitary dysfunction

It can be from any injury to the thyroid. It is usually an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system, which usually fights infections, attacks the thyroid gland.
