Uric acid is formed in the body by proteins that contain purines, these proteins are largely part of the diet and come from the metabolising of cells nuclei. Some purines are produced by the body itself as well. These purines are turned into uric acid, which if all is well is eliminated with urine and some is removed via the large intestine and perspiration. however if the uric acid is not being removed quickly enough it's concentration in the blood stream becomes to high. This leads to tiny sharp uric acid crystals being formed that make their way to the joints and kidneys.

High uric acid levels can be the result of high production of uric acid in the body or by decreased excretion of uric acid in the urine. Specifically, factors that may cause high uric acid concentration in your blood include: # Medication used for the treatment of high blood pressure, like low-dose aspirin or diuretics, # Excessive consumption of alcohol, # Excessive consumption of caffeine ,

# genetically passed on

# Hodgkin's disease # Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) # Leukemia # Niacin, or vitamin B-3 # Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma # Obesity # Psoriasis # Purine-rich foods like organ meat (Kidney, liver etc), game meat, anchovies, herring, gravy, dried beans, dried peas are some examples. # Some immune-suppression drugs It is wise to always consult a health professional in making decisions about the treatment of illnesses like gout.

Excess serum accumulation of uric acid can lead to a type of Arthritis known as gout. Elevated serum uric acid (hyperuricemia) can result from high intake of purine-rich foods, high fructose intake (regardless of fructose's low glycemic index (GI) value) and/or impaired excretion by the kidneys. Saturation levels of uric acid in blood may result in one form of kidney stones when the urate crystallizes in the kidney. These uric acid stones are radiolucent and so do not appear on an abdominal plain x-ray or CT scan. Their presence must be diagnosed by ultrasound for this reason. Very large stones may be detected on x-ray by their displacement of the surrounding kidney tissues. Some patients with gout eventually get uric kidney stones. Gout can occur where serum uric acid levels are as low as 6 mg/dL (~357µmol/L), but an individual can have serum values as high as 9.6 mg/dL (~565µmol/L) and not have gout. (Source Wikipedia)

Uric acid is produced as a result of the metabolising of purines which are found in the nuclei of living cells. A proportion of them come from our own body's as cells are replaced and absorbed the rest come from the things we eat. if the system is such that it can not eliminate the uric acid rapidly enough it turns into uric acid crystals which are what cause the pain and damage involved. Kidney problems can cause levels to rise as can diet for example rich foods like seafood, offal meats, red meats, alcoholic beverages.
