You need cold air and warm air. When they meet, the warm air goes up. It makes thunderstorm clouds! The cold air has ice crystals. The warm air has water droplets. During the storm, the droplets and crystals bump together and move apart in the air. This rubbing makes static electrical charges in the clouds.

Ordinary lightning is the discharge of an electrical potential created between clouds and the ground, or between clouds. An ionization path is formed by "step leaders" from the positive and negative charge areas, and a bolt can consist of multiple strokes up and down the same path.

friction of raindrops in clouds . lightening can also be caused by violent volcanic eruptions and throughout the world there are 16000000 every year. some lightening bolts are hot enough to make sand into glass. About three people are killed every year by lightening and, if you wear rubber-soled shoes it helps. DON'T STAND NEXT TOP ANYTHING TALL church towers have copper caballing so that if they are struck, the electric charge will be passed straight to the ground.
