Lead was added to gasoline to inexpensively increase octane ratings and to also help reduce engine knocking.Increasing octane and reduce engine knocking are exactly the same thing, as the test method to measure octane of a fuel is to see when a standard engine begins knocking. The higher compression ratio the standard test engine can be operated at without knocking, the higher the octane of the fuel being tested.
Either get higher octane fuel, or retard the timing. That is about the only thing that will help

"knocking" in an engine is the fuel igniting from the heat of compression of the fuel and the air together. in a desel engine this is how it is suposed to work because it has no spark plugs so the only way to ingite the fuel is by compressing the fuel and the air by a ratio of about 22 to 1. in a gas engine the fuel is ignitied by a spark plug, if you use low grade fuel the explosion can happen too early (before the spark plug ignites it) and cause a knocking noise in the engine whitch can cause dammage long tearm the typical compression ratio for a gas engine is 10 to 1. the more compression you have the higher grade fuel you need to prevent "knocking" whitch is why higher end cars need higher grade fuel because they have higher compression engines whitch make more horsepower with omperable size engines.
there are a few reasons for engines knocking......... - bad type of fuel - higher gear ratio at slower speeds if your engine knocks when you start it up then you have probably got a bad or dirty fuel in your car... change the filters or just get away with using it and change your petrol station if the engine knocking happens during driving then its because you are putting more gas on at lower speeds and higher gear ratios...you just need to lower your gear. say change from gear 3 to gear 2 and try increasing the gas gradually and slowly and the knocking should go away....

Knocking is caused by preignition, where the heat in the cylinder causes the gas to ignite before the spark plug does. Try using a higher octane/grade gas and see if the noise goes away.
Most likely the timing is a little too high for low grade octane. Either go to a higher octane ( $$$$ ) or best, with a timing lite, just lower the timing till it stops knocking for the fuel that you are using.

No. If your car runs well on a lower octane gasoline (i.e. no engine pinging or knocking), then putting a higher octane gas in your tank is just wasting money...
