Condoleezza Rice grew up in Alabama during the Jim Crow era. She had to adjust her life to using "colored" facilities, lack of hotel and restaurant access, and missing school days due to threats at school. Her parents were very active in keeping their children safe as well as providing them with opportunities in education. In 1967, her father moved the family to Denver, Colorado, and she attended high school and college there.
The biggest one was being black in a segregated society. But she also overcame dire poverty in addition to racism. Mary McLeod Bethune was the child of former slaves, and was one of seventeen children; she was the only one in her family to get any education. Despite the obstacles, she was able to create an impressive life as an educator and an advocate. Her first major achievement was in 1904, when she founded a school to provide education and job training for black girls in Florida; it ultimately became a nursing school and then a college in 1929. She also founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935, to provide more opportunities for advocacy and better represent the interests and goals of black Americans. Unfortunately, despite being well-educated, a good public speaker, and someone with personal experience of how black people were treated in America, and despite having a number of powerful friends in white America (including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt), she was not able to achieve her goal of bringing about racial equality at that time. But throughout the 1930s, Bethune was an important influence on the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and throughout her life, she was one of the best-known and most respected black women in America, in that era before the Civil Rights Movement took hold.
