The characteristic bond for a cured phenolic resin is a methylene group, derived from a formaldehyde molecule, joining two aromatic rings derived from two phenol molecules. A wide variety of structural formulas are possible, because resins can be made from a variety of ratios between phenol and formaldehyde.

It's a benzene ring with a -OH (hydroxyl) group attached directly to it. Making it more reactive than the very stable benzene.
It was used as an early type of antiseptic.
Now you can react phenol with many other chemicals and create alkyl phenols found in detergents, chlorophenols found in antiseptics.
Also phenol is found in aspirin and paints.
