Simple phenolic resins are condensation polymers formed from phenol and formaldehyde. Therefore, they contain only the elements found in phenol and formaldehyde: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The characteristic bond for a cured phenolic resin is a methylene group, derived from a formaldehyde molecule, joining two aromatic rings derived from two phenol molecules. A wide variety of structural formulas are possible, because resins can be made from a variety of ratios between phenol and formaldehyde.

Phenol has many many uses.

It's a benzene ring with a -OH (hydroxyl) group attached directly to it. Making it more reactive than the very stable benzene.

It was used as an early type of antiseptic.

Now you can react phenol with many other chemicals and create alkyl phenols found in detergents, chlorophenols found in antiseptics.

Also phenol is found in aspirin and paints.

All phenols are common to having an -OH group attached to a benzene molecule. In pure form phenols are water soluble organic crystals. They are also dangerous skin blistering agents.
