Charleston SC (Charles II of England), Charlestown MA (Charles 1 of England), St Louis Mo (Louis XI of France). Carolina, later divided into North Carolina and South Carolina, was named after Charles I of England, derived from Carolus, the Latin version of Charles. Virginia is named after the "Virgin Queen", Elizabeth I of England. Virginia has many counties named in honor of British royalty. Maryland was founded as a haven for English Catholics and named after the last Catholic monarch, "Bloody" Mary. Charlotte NC was named for the wife of George II of England, Charlotte of Mecklenburg (Charlotte is in Mecklenburg County). Georgia is named for George I of England.
