Southern Mexico
It depends on the specific region. Northern Mexico is arid to semi-arid, and with the exception of the state capitals, most inland cities are industrial and mining boomtowns. Central Mexico is temperate in nature, and most cities are former colonial towns which look like modern Spanish cities, such as Madrid, Zaragoza or Barcelona. The most important among these include Guadalajara, Queretaro, Puebla and Mexico City, capital of the country. Finally, you have southern Mexico, which is subtropical. Most inland cities in the southern region look like their Central American counterparts.

You shouldn't. It has some of the ugliest and most insecure cities in the whole country. Juarez, for example is the most insecure city in the world - more than Iraq or Afghanistan. Nicer cities are located along the coasts and on central and southern Mexico.
