Well, basically all they wanted to do was control everything, via the excuse that they had "Papal Supremacy" which was the idea that God was connected with them and that the Catholic church members were God's messengers and that all those who were in Europe were supposed to obey them because they spread the word of God. So basically, they made some pretty poor ruling choices.
