Answer 1: There is no such thing as an associate of applied arts degree. There is, though, such a thing as an associate of applied science degree. There are, in fact, at the associates degree level, only three types:

* Associate of Arts (AA)

* Associate of Science (AS)

* Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

Both the AA and AS degrees are "academic" degrees. The AAS degree is a "career" degree.

The AA/AS degree contains from 30 to 45 semester credit hours of what's called "lower division general education" (LDGE); whereas the AAS degree contains perhaps as little as 18 semester credit hours of LDGE.

Either the AA or AS degree, therefore, is better suited for transfer into a four-year bachelors degree program, and be counted as the entire first two (freshman and sophomore) years thereof; hence the reason it's called an "academic" degree.

An AAS, on the other hand, will be shy of LDGE coursework, and so is not well suited for transfer into a bachelors degree; and the AAS degree holder, in fact, will find himself/herself needing to "catch-up" on LDGE coursework if s/he ever attempts to transfer his/her AAS into a bachelors degree program.

The AAS degree, however, because it contains fewer LDGE hours, contains more coursework in whatever is the AAS degree's major (which is why it's considered a "career" degree); and so if said major is in a good career area, then an AAS can actually be a nice degree to have if on plans on entering said career area. However, no associates degree -- be it AA/AS or AAS -- will ever earn someone as much money, or prepare him/her to climb the management ladder, as a bachelors degree.

As for what courses are required, that just depends on the school. Go to the website of the school in which you're interested, and find its "catalog" (which is available as both a printed-on-paper and bound softcover book which you can request be sent to you via the US Mail; or which can probably also be downloaded from the school's website as a PDF file). In the catalog you'll find every single thing that you could possibly need to know about the degrees that the school offers, their course requirements and costs, and all the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the school. It'll all be right there, in the catalog!

An associates degree consists of sixty (60) (to maybe 66, depending on the school; usually 60) semester credit hours of coursework. Each class or course is equal to three (3) semester credit hours. Therefore, you will take 10 classes/courses -- five (5) per semester -- per year for two years (a total of 20 courses or classes over four semesters) in order to earn an associates degree.

A bachelors degree is simply double those numbers: 120 semester credit hours over four years (eight semesters).

The important issue is completion of the all the prerequisite coursework. Typically, these courses are as follows.Human Anatomy and Physiology I and IIMicrobiologyChemistry (inorganic and organic and biochemistry)English Composition I and IIGeneral PsychologyChild PsychologyPrinciples of SociologyHumanities ElectivesAs long as you have the prerequisites completed with the required GPA, the arts or science degree at the associates level is not going to matter.
