Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, which burned from October 8th to October 10th, in 1871. The actual starting date of the "week" in a given year depends upon which day of the week corresponds to the original tragedy.
In North America the Peshtigo Fire in 1871 holds the record at 1700 estimated dead. Same day as the great Chicago fire.
Conditions were perfect for a fire. The land was dry. On the same day as the Peshtago Fire in Wisconsin that burned a large amount of Wisconsin, Chicago too had a fire. Four square miles of the city was destroyed and as many as three hundred people lost their lives.
Chicago's Great Fire of 1871 stretched as far north as Belden Ave and Clark St in Lincoln Park (just east of DePaul University), and as far south as Canal Port Avenue, near modern-day Chinatown. The large majority of the fire zone was east of the river.
