It is typically sung on New Years Eve and New Years day to celebrate the change from past to the future.
Auld Lang Syne is usually sung at midnight on New Year's Eve.
midnight on New Years Eve
Auld Lang Syne is the only real traditional song to play on New Years Eve, but there are plaenty of different versions. I personally like the versions by The Reducers, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, and Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin. But as Dan Fogelberg died this year, I would even give his version a spin. Other good songs to play on the night would be Celebration by Kool and The Gang, The Final Countdown by Europe, Kiss Off by Violent Femmes, Waiting For Tonight by Jennifer Lopez, All Night Long by Lionel Richie or anything with "midnight" or "new year" in it. In The Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett, New Years Day by U2, The Midnight Special by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Next Year by Foo Fighters. I suggest keeping it light and fun and just play party tunes.

Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish folk song that roughly translates into "Old Long Since"; or "For Old Times Sake". It became a New Year's Eve favorite in the U.S. thanks to Canadian bandleader Guy Lombardo, who hosted an annual end-of-year concert in New York City starting in 1929.In 1965, Lombardo told LIFE magazine that he chose the song because Auld Lang Syne is our theme song-and was long before anyone ever heard us on the radio. In our particular part of western Ontario, where there's a large Scottish population, it was traditional for bands to end every dance with Auld Lang Syne. We didn't think it was known here. When we left Canada we had no idea we'd ever play it again. The popularity of Lombardo's yearly concert helped the song become a U.S. tradition to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of the next, and its status as the New Year';s anthem was reinforced in classic Hollywood films such as An Affair To Remember and It's a Wonderful Life.
It has traditionally been a New Year's Eve/Day song.
Written by Robert Burns in 1788, "auld lang syne" (times long past) is traditionally sung (especially inScotland) on New Years Eve - so heralding in a new beginning and saying farewell to the previous year

usually Easter monday but this year the day after anzac day .
In December there is quite a lot of things happening. Advertising for Christmas sales started in September and pushed even harder in the last week of November. Some people celebrate on Christmas Eve and others celebrate on Christmas Day. The next day, 26th, is Boxing Day, traditionally in the United Kingdom to share with the poor. On the very last day of the month most people will have a party for the New Year's Eve and at exactly midnight they will sing a song with their arms crossed holding hands with the people next to them called 'Auld Lang Syne.'
